La Isla Network is a Nicaragua based NGO working at the intersection of public health and human rights to address the fatal epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of non-traditional causes (CKDnT, formerly known as Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown causes or CKDu) among sugarcane workers in Latin America. CKDnT kills more people in Nicaragua than lukemmia, AIDS and diabetes combined. We believe that some of the primary causes of CKDnT stem from harsh working conditions within the sugar industry.
The primary goal of La Isla Network is to improve working conditions within the sugar industry, and in turn save the lives of sugarcane workers in Nicaragua by ending the CKDnT epidemic.
